Bringing a World of Light and Imagination to Birmingham
As evening fell, an ordinary walk through the landscape became a journey into color, wildlife and legend. Glowing flowers lined the path, peacocks opened their brilliant tails, and fantasy creatures appeared from the darkness to welcome families into the Birmingham Magic Lantern Festival.
Plan a memorable lantern festival
A festival made for discovery
Creating an evening families could explore together
The Birmingham project brought many subjects into one festival: flowers, peacocks, woodland animals, dragons and mythical creatures. Our challenge was to give every scene its own surprise while making the entire route feel like one unfolding story. Each turn introduced a new mood, encouraging visitors to keep walking and wondering what would appear next.
A design that tells a story
From a glowing garden to a world of fantasy
The experience began with a flower-lined avenue that gently drew visitors away from the everyday world. Playful animal scenes created warmer, more intimate moments along the path. Then the route opened into larger spectacles, where peacocks, dragons and illuminated reflections made the landscape feel completely transformed.
Festival highlights
The scenes that gave the night its magic
Every part of the route offered a different memory. Some scenes surrounded visitors with color, while others invited them to pause beside a familiar animal or look upward at a towering mythical figure. Together, these highlights turned the festival into more than a display; they made it a night-time adventure.
Craftsmanship · Made in Zigong
Every lantern began in the hands of our artisans
In our Zigong workshop, steel rods were shaped into expressive figures one line at a time. Lighting was installed inside each structure, fabric was stretched carefully across every curve, and color was applied by hand. This combination of engineering and traditional lantern craftsmanship gave each character its shape by day and its glow after dark.
The character first takes form through hand-shaped steel lines that define posture, movement and strength.
Layered petals and three-dimensional details are refined before the surface is covered.
Colored fabric is stretched across the frame so every curve remains smooth, clean and expressive.
Hand-applied gradients and highlights add depth that remains visible both before and after the lights come on.
Made in Zigong, prepared for Birmingham
We assembled the major scenes before they left China
Before shipping, the dragon, peacock and animal groups were assembled in our workshop for a complete inspection. Our team checked their expressions, lighting, colors and connection points together. This allowed us to correct small details early and make sure the finished scenes would appear in Birmingham as the designers intended.
The dragon
The face, body proportions and internal lighting were reviewed as one complete character.
The peacock
Every feather was checked for rhythm, symmetry and color before the display was separated for transport.
The animal group
The characters were placed together to make sure their scale and expressions created the intended story.
Protected for the long journey
Every lantern was packed with the same care used to make it
Lanterns may look strong when illuminated, but their fabric surfaces, projecting details and internal lighting all require careful protection. Each section was wrapped, supported and placed into a purpose-built wooden crate. Related modules were kept together and clearly organized so the installation team could rebuild the scenes in the correct order.
Wings, petals and projecting elements are supported before the module is moved.
Related modules are wrapped and grouped according to the order in which they will be installed.
Timber structures protect the lanterns and provide stable points for warehouse handling.
The closed crates are secured and prepared for loading into the shipping container.
The final check before departure
Nothing was sealed until our team inspected it
Before each crate closed, we checked the wrapping, support points, electrical components and identification labels. Careful preparation in the workshop meant less unnecessary handling and a smoother installation after the shipment reached the United Kingdom.
From Zigong to the United Kingdom
International delivery planned around the installation
The project did not end when production was finished. Crates were loaded into the container in a planned sequence, secured for sea transport and documented for the receiving team. By connecting the loading order with the festival route, we helped the destination crew move more efficiently from unloading to assembly.
When the lights came on
Birmingham stepped into a different world
The completed festival connected every scene into one evening experience. Families could wander through glowing flowers, meet friendly animals, stand beneath mythical creatures and pause beside brilliant reflections on the water. The changing scale and atmosphere made the route feel alive from its first light to its final landmark.
